What is Compulsive Personality Disorder?

We can treat your struggling teen if they have
Compulsive Personality Disorder, sometimes called Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder, or OCPD.  This is characterized by a fixation with perfectionism and control, showing itself in highly motivated (often, first born) children.  Your teen may find it very difficult to be decisive, and be oversensitive to critique, resist being flexible or open to new situations, as they compulsively reach for perfection in virtually everything he or she does.  They may show repetitive behaviors (as in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder*) beyond their control to stop, have a preoccupation with minutiae, their own rules and lists, and even be somewhat of a workaholic.

Your teen is likely to struggle with his or her own, as well as perceived, expectations of those around them.  Causes are believed to be an interlinking of environmental, genetic and unbalanced brain chemistry.

*Note: while sometimes used interchangeably, OCPD is not to be confused with OCD.  An OCD sufferer has unwanted thoughts, but an OCPD sufferer believes his or her thinking to be correct and natural.

There are not blood tests that can prove your teen’s diagnosis; a physician must determine whether their symptoms and life history meet the criteria.  Their thinking may be so instinctive for them that he or she does not recognize that they have this problem, possibly not even realizing it until their world collapses around them.

Continual group, individual and long-term psychotherapy can be highly effective in improving your teen’s situation, as he or she is likely to be unwilling to seek these changes.  It is important to remember that your teen has not chosen to have these compulsive thoughts and so any judgment, real or perceived, only increases the stress they already deal with.  It is important to encourage them, to help them be comfortable in new ways of thinking, and accept your teen, rather than judge them for unacceptable behaviors.

Support groups are an excellent adjunct, as a way to gain emotional and social support from the community, assuring your teen’s continuing independence and stability
